As my only sarcastic note, I wish to god I knew what the difference between SunOS and Solaris is/was. It seems like SunOS x.y = Solaris x-3.y but thats just a guess. Anyone know? Please clue me in. mckenna@meangene.com
SunOS is the OPERATING SYSTEM Component of the SOLARIS Workstation or Server environment, which includes a WINDOW SYSTEM and in Solaris 1.x versions includes a COMPILER (to allow you to reconfigure the kernel)The above paragraph is a marketing eye view from SunSoft of what Solaris is (I am an engineer, NOT a marketing creature.) Solaris was created as a marketing concept when SunOS 5.x was ready to debut, then retroactively applied to the existing BSD based SunOS 4.x The older OS being included in the Solaris 1.x product line and the new (SVR4) OS included in the Solaris 2.x product line.
Current versions are Solaris 1.1.2 (included SunOS 4.1.2) and Solaris 2.5.1 (including SunOS 5.5.1) I'm writing this from Solaris 2.6 which will includ SunOS 2.6 (I'm really looking forward to this release, it has significant enhancements)
People generally refer to Solaris 1.x as SunOS and Solaris 2.x as Solaris, ignoring the application of the Solaris marketing structure to the older OS and distinguishing the new OS from the old this way.
So, Hope this helps... Regards.
